Photo Exhibition "Testimonies of Uprooting: Pierre Bourdieu in Algeria"
12. January 2009
The exhibition, which will continue until 1 March, derives from research at the Center of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Integration" of the University of Konstanz, and it is complemented by an extensive accompanying program.
The sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. The photo exhibition "Testimonies of Uprooting: Pierre Bourdieu in Algeria" draws attention to the classic sociologist’s beginnings. The photographs taken by Bourdieu in Algeria between 1958 and 1964 show a country torn by conflict. At the same time, they reflect the way that Bourdieu, during the Algerian war, made the transition from philosophy to sociology. For nearly four decades, these photographs gathered dust in cardboard boxes before they were made available to the public after Bourdieu's death.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the University of Konstanz Press (UVK) is publishing a new edition of the book, Pierre Bourdieu in Algeria: Testimonies of Uprooting, edited by Franz Schultheis and Christine Frisinghelli. Distinction (1979), a class analysis of modern societies, is regarded as Bourdieu's main work.
Individual aspects of the exhibition will be taken up in three workshops open to interested parties (registration is requested). Accompanying the photo exhibition, there will also be three films screened at the Scala Cinema (on the Marktstätte in Konstanz), each to be followed by a discussion with the audience. Those films are the documentary "Sociology is a Martial Art" (21 January, at 7:30 pm), the thriller "Caché" (28 January, at 8:00 pm) and the road movie "L'autre Monde" (4 February, 8:00 pm clock). Other events will be held in St. Gallen, in cooperation with the university there.
The exhibit in the Bildungs-Turm is related to current research of the Center of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Integration" at the University of Konstanz. The exhibit is open Tuesdays to Fridays (3:00 pm to 6:00 pm), and Saturdays and Sundays (10 am to 5 pm).
Opening: Saturday, 17 January 2009, 5 pm.
